Burrito Skulls : How to Make Spooky, Savory Skull-Shaped Burritos at Home

  • Author: Clara
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8 skull burritos

Description

Burrito Skulls are a spooky twist on classic burritos, baked in skull-shaped pans with a golden crust and filled with cheesy, flavorful goodness—perfect for Halloween or themed parties.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or store-bought crescent roll/biscuit dough)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter or shortening
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1 lb ground beef or chicken
  • 1 cup canned black beans
  • 1 cup corn kernels
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 jalapeño (optional, for spice)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Cooking spray or oil (for greasing pan)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a skull-shaped pan.
  2. Prepare the dough: mix flour, baking powder, salt, and butter until crumbly. Add warm water gradually and knead until smooth. Cover and rest for 20 minutes.
  3. Cook the filling: sauté onion until soft, then add ground beef or chicken, season with salt and pepper, and cook through. Stir in beans, corn, and optional jalapeños. Remove from heat and mix with shredded cheese.
  4. Roll dough into thin rounds and press into each skull mold cavity, leaving overhang.
  5. Fill each cavity with the meat and bean mixture (about 2/3 full).
  6. Fold dough over the filling and pinch edges to seal. Brush tops with egg wash.
  7. Bake for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Cool slightly, then carefully remove skulls from the pan. Serve with salsa, guacamole, or sour cream.

Notes

Do not overfill the molds to prevent leaking. Keep dough slightly chilled for easier handling. For vegetarian option, substitute meat with rice and extra beans/veggies.
