A comforting holiday classic with golden bread cubes, gooey cheese, and fragrant herbs, perfect for family gatherings.
Ingredients
- 10 cups bread cubes (day-old or toasted)
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or mix)
- 3–4 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage)
- 1 cup onion, chopped
- 1 cup celery, chopped
- 1/2 cup butter
- 3–4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Toast or dry bread cubes if not already prepared.
- In a large skillet, melt butter and sauté onion and celery until soft.
- In a large bowl, combine bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, shredded cheese, and fresh herbs.
- Gradually add broth until bread is moist but not mushy.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Transfer mixture to a buttered baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil, sprinkle with extra cheese if desired, and bake 15–20 minutes more until golden and crisp on top.
Notes
Prepare bread cubes and grate cheese a day ahead for easier assembly. Can be made vegetarian by using vegetable broth.
