Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter (discard)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Beat together the softened butter and sugar until creamy in a large bowl.
  3. Add the sourdough starter, egg, and vanilla extract to the bowl. Mix until well combined.
  4. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in another bowl.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring just until combined.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips gently into the dough.
  7. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
  8. Shape the dough into a 1-inch thick circle and cut it into wedges or use a round cutter.
  9. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and enjoy!

Notes

Make sure your butter is soft but not melted for the best texture. Don’t overmix the dough; mix just until combined to keep the scones tender.
