Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder (if making chocolate cupcakes)
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- For frosting: 1/2 cup butter, 2 cups powdered sugar, 2–3 tbsp milk or cream, 1 tsp vanilla
- Decoration: melted chocolate or black decorating gel
- Toothpick or skewer for spiderweb design
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa (if using), and baking powder.
- Add eggs, butter, milk, and vanilla; mix until just combined.
- Divide batter into liners and bake 18–20 minutes, until cupcakes spring back when lightly touched. Let cool completely.
- Prepare frosting by beating butter, powdered sugar, milk/cream, and vanilla until smooth and fluffy.
- Frost each cooled cupcake with a smooth layer of buttercream.
- Pipe 3–4 concentric circles of melted chocolate or black gel on top of frosting.
- Drag a toothpick from the center outward through the circles to form a spiderweb design, wiping between drags for clean lines.
- Optional: Add gummy spiders, candy eyes, or Halloween sprinkles for extra decoration.
Notes
For best results, decorate the cupcakes on the same day of serving so the spiderwebs stay neat. Mini cupcakes also work great for kids’ parties.
